A solid piece of architecture based on local typology, the building takes the long, low simple form of a traditional ‘blackhouse’. Constructed in raked stone, the form is accentuated by a wide eaves detail and a long slate roof. The inside is lofty and spacious, occupied by a bar, dining room and sitting room space.
The bar is set in front of a glowing oak and tinted glass wall in various whisky coloured hues. The idea was to try to emulate the warmth and welcome of lit tavern windows on a dark night.
Artwork throughout the estate was carefully curated by the Pangolin Collection and incorporated into the architecture and interiors from an early stage.
The solid architecture of the building sits well in the landscape, with stonework tapering into the ground. The building has a contemporary feel, within a traditional idiom and incorporates the highest standards of energy efficiency, needed on this off grid site.
